Who needs the most open championship victory?

The last major of the year is the 2025 Open champion, which started this week on the Royal Portrait in Northern Ireland. Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and JJ Spaun have already won major titles this year, but a long list of stars have not. Propose your case: If they don’t win this week, can they play their biggest football without a professional from 2025?

Sean Zak, Senior Writer (@sean_zak): Jon Rahm. He is always on the list of people entering the week with considerable expectations. The others on that short list? They have won one in the last 24 months. Ram didn’t. He has gone through T7, T8, T14, T7 in his last four Grand Slams. The battle is not enough.

James Colgan, News and Featured Editor (@jamescolgan26): Ram is a good answer. Although he is far from entering a major “drought”, a great golfer has only been so many years. Another pair of players at their peak: Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth. These two guys were once the future of American golf. The loss in Portrush will make every golfer’s 31-year-old season radiate in the case of Dour.

Zephyr Melton, Assistant Editor (@zephyrmelton): Great choice above, so I will add Collin Morikawa. After he started, he began his career and felt like he was probably the greatest champion of his generation. He plays golf this season, but if he doesn’t win in the next few weeks, his winning drought will extend to two years, while his main drought will reach four years.

Corgen: It was a weird year for Rory, but his game trended again. For Hollywood executives (two LS) executives dreaming of McIlroy’s professional grand slam season biopics, victory will be good news. I think the top 7 performance sounds more likely.

Melton: It feels like he will probably join in, but hopefully win is a win. I don’t want him to put out him like he did in 2019, but I don’t want him to have a purple-red jug in his hands either.

What is a juicy open champion storyline you are monitoring this week?

Zach: It may not be fresh, but juicy. Someone will win their Ryder Cup this week. Maybe not literally, the way Scottie Scheffler is guaranteed mathematically – but the symbolic rubber stamp is provided in Prothush. There are many scores available and the player starts to force the captain’s hand. I’m watching Lucas Glover, who only recently climbed onto the radar. He ranks 16th and ranked in the top 20 in Porthush in 2019.

Corgen: Promise I’ll stop Sean after this question, but Keegan Bradley can make the Ryder Cup a totally inevitable in some way this weekend with January no one foresees.

Melton: I’m interested in seeing the fares for Scottie Scheffler. Of all major tournaments, this is his slightest success championship. It’s only a matter of time before we win one, but so far we’re still waiting.

Grace Kim beat world No. 2 Jeeno Thitikul on the second playoff hole in one of the most epic results of the year to win the Evian title and her first major title. Zach: Liv promised that they made some necessary amendments. I think we have to accept their words? Underlying speculation will be a completely improved method of qualification that will allow more people to go on tour even during the week. This is the main point that OWGR accepts. Corgen: This time it may be different, because the long-term legitimacy of OWGR as a ranking system depends on the inclusion of LIV. I don’t think what upstarts do is right: owgr’s qualifications, and I think some work should be done to weigh the liv fairly, as it’s obviously a smaller product. If the focus of OWGR is purely deciphering the main champion qualification, then the discussion about platform LIV is longer and I’m cool. But if OWGR’s purpose is to rank the best golfers in the world, it would be wise to include the Tour along with a handful of top 50 players.

Melton: As Sean said, Liv promised that they had made the necessary changes to meet the criteria. Should we trust them? Who knows. I – like many golf fans – are very tired of the whole ordeal at this moment.
