Steve Allan, fifty-one, recently became the first PGA Tour champion and won the title on the Galleri Classic in March. The victory is only the third game of Allen’s career and his first in 23 years since his victory at the 2002 Holden Australian Open.
In this week’s episode of Subpar, Allen describes the long and tortuous path of his professional golf career compared to hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz. Lessons from the rest of us? never give up.
“I lost the card on the PGA Tour in the late ’05s,” Allen said. “I got it back for ’07, ’08, ’09’ and then lost it in ’09, completely lost it and didn’t even finish the top 200, so there was no korn ferry. So it was a reality check. But, at the end of ’09, I still felt that from the end of ’08, I might have had only 12 months of travel time, maybe my best trip.
I started a bad start in 2008 and I ended up in late 2008 and I think Dustin Johnson won his first game. I got my seventh match at Grayhawk. There I almost struggled to get the lead and got stuck. I think it’s the fourth game for Mississippi, so I’m not that yet, so I’m not here yet, so I’m still.
After losing his PGA Tour card, Allen had the opportunity to participate in the newly formed Oneasia Tour.
“A lot of the best Australians didn’t go to oneasia because they all went to the PGA Tour, the European Tour, the Japanese Tour, so I was able to get some invitations and that made me a few years.”
Allan returned to the Korn Ferry Tour and regained PGA Tour form in 2015, but nearly missed it.
“I ended up losing the Korn Ferry Card as well, and then I was 18 and not so good, and then ’19 I did a great job for the whole year and I passed three PGA tours.
He continued: “So, I was doing well enough to not give up, that, I’ve been deep into my 40s and I think, the championship journey is coming.” “Unfortunately, I was really sick at Q school that year, so I couldn’t play and then we had a year, so there were a few years to come, and then I really knew, I really knew, I really wanted to give the championship tour because I still like playing games, because I still like playing games, I still like playing games. That’s a hard thing. Give it a crack.”
Allan earned a T3 contribution at the 2024 PGA Tour Qualification, but instead received full waivers in last year’s PGA Tour Champions. However, at the end of the year, he lost 36 exemption thresholds and was in a conditional state in 2025.
In March, Steve Stricker got a seat in the Galleri Classic Field. He then won the game 69-65-67. Now, he has a full position this year and the next.
