Back problems are back.
At last week’s PGA Championship, the 28-year-old made a layoff at last week’s PGA Championship on Friday to repair two herniated discs and would miss the rest of the FedEx Cup season, including the last two majors.
Zalatoris made the announcement on Instagram on Monday, saying he hopes to stop acting before the fall. The procedure is DejáVu of Zalatoris, who underwent microsection eight months after the spring of 2023.
“Hello everyone, share health updates,” Zalatoris wrote in his post. “I started feeling a little uncomfortable this spring and gradually got worse. After the PGA championship, MRI showed that I had re-paired two discs. After discussing the choice with the medical team, I had surgery last Friday with Dr. Michael Duffy of the Texas Backseat Institute.”
Zalatoris has six top 10 in his top nine major starts on a tour full of young talent. He was ranked seventh in the world rankings and led the 2022 FedEx Cup when back pain forced him to quit the BMW championship. He had his first back surgery in the second spring after he quit the Masters in 2023 and did not return until early 2024. Despite half of the layoffs, he soon showed signs of old shape at the 2024 Genesis Invitational, finishing T2 at the 2024 Genesis Invitational, three strokes behind winner hideki Matsuyama.
However, that summer, the pain recovered, and this time it was his hips, which was the damage throughout the year. During the offseason, Zalatoris hopes to be better prepared for the wear and tear of the PGA Tour, adding 20 pounds of muscle to his 6-foot-2-foot-2.
Before Monday’s news, 2025 is Zalatoris’ mixed bag. He was the highest in the American Express T12 in 12 games. But he missed the Masters and PGA championship weekend and now he will miss the U.S. Open and Open championships.
However, in his Instagram post, Zalatoris raised an optimistic tone.
“I’m happy to say that I woke up feeling good (after the surgery) and was excited about my long-term back health,” he wrote. “It’s time to focus on my recovery and come back. Looking forward to seeing everyone in the fall!”
