The Winnipeg Jets (1-0) beat the St. Louis Blues’ third-cycle deficit 5-3 in Game 1 of its Western Conference quarterfinal series. It’s a back and forth game, but the Jets are able to overcome adversity to gain an early advantage in the series.
The Blues (0-1) won the ruthless Jets offense in the second half of the game despite winning the fight from the special teams in the game.
Game review
The Blues approached the powerful play marker halfway through the first halfway opens the score. After the Jets tried to create a strange man running and failed, the puck found Robert Thomas, who ripped a shot on Connor Hellebuyck’s glove to make it 1-0.
Mark Scheifele tied things together with his own strength game goal, tied it up from the shoulders of Bruce defenders Ryan Suter and Jordan Binnington to a 1-1 score.
A few minutes later, Jaret Anderson-Dolan joined in the fun. He deflected Luke Schenn Point and beat Binnington to lead 2-1.
Shortly thereafter, the Blues linked the game to Oscar Sundqvist’s goal. He collected a loose puck from Luke Schenn’s skateboard and was able to bury it in 2-2.
The Blues led by their second strong goal. Jordan Kyrou took advantage of the screen in front of Hellebuyck and found the top corner before Hellebuyck could even see it.
Half of the third phase was halfway through, but the jets were knotted again. Scheifele found Alex Iafallo on the net side, and he was able to cross the far end of Binnington to make it 3-3.
Kyle Connor plays the hero, who won the final match with 1:36 left in the third stage. Despite the beginning of this period, the Jets are back and the Blues stopped in the regular season very effectively.
Adam Lowry added an empty net goal, giving it an early advantage in the series, making it 5-3.
Hellebuyck recorded the victory, stopping 14 of 17 shots. Binnington won the loss after giving up four goals in 25 goals.
