Manchester United seems to have set their sights on Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo.
When Ruben Amorim wants to leave his mark, the Red Devils may want to strengthen their team this summer. The Portuguese tactician swapped Sport CP for Manchester United in November 2024, welcomed defenders Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven to the club during the January transfer window.
The 20-time British champion hopes to further increase their defensive squad in the summer. They have reportedly made a formal offer for Ronald Araujo and have a “£50 million bid” on the table. It is unclear whether the Uruguay international will leave Barcelona for Manchester United, especially given that Amorim’s side may not have Champions League football next season.
Araujo, 26, renewed his contract with Barcelona until the beginning of the year, but that didn’t end the players’ advice and the club could take a separate approach. He has had multiple injuries over the past few years, with Barcelona boss Hansi Flick preferring the centre-back partnership between pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez, the 26-year-old has been limited to six La Liga appearances this semester.
Manchester United’s interests in Ronald Araujo
If Manchester United is going to make a high-profile transfer, they will have to sell first to comply with financial regulations. Both Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof will withdraw from the club as free agents after their respective contracts expire. It is unclear when Lisandro Martinez will return after suffering an ACL injury in February, and Harry Maguire’s future at Old Trafford remains uncertain.
So despite signing Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt last summer, the Red Devils will be forced to solve their defensive puzzles. Ineos expressed interest in Araujo to strengthen their team, one of the centre-backs that are highly regarded throughout Europe.
The Rivera-born star has made over 160 appearances for the Catalan Giants and scored 10 goals. He is primarily a trade centre-back, and he can also operate at right backs when needed and work for his team. Araujo’s European experience and combination of technical skills and physical attributes will make him a valuable addition to Manchester United’s preference. He is a leader who can join Yoro and De Ligt at Amorim’s defender Nakai.
However, Uruguay remains reluctant to leave Barcelona, and he signed the extension until earlier this year for 2031. Therefore, Ineos has completed a task to convince Araujo to leave Nou Camp for Manchester United in the summer and their position can be strengthened due to the club’s qualifications to enter the Champions League.
